Let's chat about security in Roatan – a topic that's on everyone's mind when they think about island life. Now, the question of "how safe is it?" isn't a simple one. Just like any city, the answer is it depends on where live, the time of day, and what you're up to.
Let me share a personal anecdote. I'm originally from Chile, where I enjoyed 38 peaceful years. One day, my wife and I decided to chase our Caribbean dream and relocate to Roatan. My dad's reaction? Let's just say he wasn't thrilled. Words like "imbecile" may have even escaped his lips, along with predictions of impending doom for my children's future. My response? "Dad, Roatan is different. It's incredibly safe and full of expats like us."
Truth be told, I had never even heard of Roatan before that moment. I was just as worried as he was!
Three years later, I can confidently say Roatan feels like home. We feel safe in our community, public areas, on tours, at local events, and on the beaches. As a realtor, I move around the island all day long. I park freely, leave belongings in my car, interact with locals, eat everywhere, and explore without worry. While nighttime might require extra caution, our lifestyle leans towards quiet evenings. We enjoy dinners out and the occasional party, and as long as you're mindful and exercise common sense, you'll be just fine.
Of course, like anywhere, incidents happen, and they tend to make a lot of noise. But here's the good news, Roatán is getting a serious security upgrade. Mayor Ron McNab announced earlier this year they're installing 390 high-resolution security cameras across the island.
These cameras are gonna be everywhere - tourist hotspots, neighborhoods, you name it. It's all about making Roatán even safer for everyone, whether you live here or you're just visiting during your vacations. Mayor McNab's message is clear: safety is the top priority.
P.S. My family, including my dad, came to visit and fell in love with Roatan. My kids now attend an international Montessori school, and their future looks brighter than ever.
So if you're thinking about investing in property here, rest easy knowing you're investing your money in a place that's not only beautiful but also secure.
